Tip #37

Q: Can medications cause Parkinson’s disease?

A: Some medications can cause Parkinson-like symptoms. And sometimes folks have been misdiagnosed with Parkinson’s when it was really medication side effects. This occurs most often with older adults, who no longer can clear medications from their systems as quickly as they used to.

Some medications of concern are Reglan, used for nausea/vomiting in cases of chemotherapy, reflux, and other conditions; and the powerful tranquilizers used (usually)for persons with severe mental problems. In general, these drugs present the greatest difficulties for older adults. Check with your pharmacist for the names of other medications that could pose a problem.
