Tip #9

Blueberries and Parkinson’s disease

In a study at the Tufts University Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging, researchers gave extracts of spinach, strawberries, and blueberries to older rats. They wanted to see if these antioxidant-rich foods had any effect on aging. When they tested the rats, they found that the animals had better balance, better coordination, and improved memory. The rats who received the blueberry extract had the best results of all.

Although the study doesn’t prove that fruits or vegetables will improve Parkinson symptoms, it’s still a good idea to have several servings every day. And blueberries, strawberries and spinach are extra-rich in antioxidants, which fight free radical damage. Free radical damage may be responsible for the cell death that leads to Parkinson’s, cancer, and heart disease. So it can’t hurt to add these foods to your daily menu whenever possible.
